Easter in Norway

🇳🇴 Norsk

Easter is the most important Christian holiday and Norway's biggest vacation period. The date of Easter varies from year to year because it is calculated by an ancient rule: Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. This means Easter can fall between March 22nd and April 25th.

Norwegian Easter Traditions

Easter is Norway's biggest holiday period. Millions of Norwegians go on Easter vacation — either to the mountains for skiing or to warmer destinations abroad. Easter eggs, oranges, Kvikk Lunsj chocolate bars, and crime fiction are inseparable parts of Norwegian Easter culture. NRK (the national broadcaster) shows Easter crime series on TV, and Easter riddles are popular for children.

The Days of Easter

  • Palm Sunday — Marks the beginning of Holy Week. Not a public holiday, but many churches hold services.
  • Maundy Thursday — First official public holiday of Easter. Most Norwegians start their Easter holiday and travel to their cabins. The church commemorates the Last Supper.
  • Good Friday — One of the most solemn days in the Christian calendar. Traditionally a quiet day, but many Norwegians spend it skiing and hiking.
  • Easter Saturday — Easter eggs are given out and many gather for dinner. Not a public holiday, but most people already have the day off.
  • Easter Sunday — Celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Public holiday.
  • Easter Monday — Last public holiday of Easter. Many drive home from their cabins, and there are often long traffic queues on the roads.
